What is AITP?

The Association for Information Technology Professionals

Founded in 1951 by a progressive group of accounting department data processors, AITP was initially called the National Machine Accountants Association. From 1962 until 1996, the organization was known as "Data Processing Management Association" (DPMA).

AITP stands as the leader among organizations representing information systems (IS) professionals. With nearly 15,000 members throughout the U.S. and Canada, AITP's mission is to promote the effective, responsible management of information technology to the benefit of its members, their employers and society.

AITP Is ...

  • A pioneer in its field for the implementation of CIS curricula in secondary schools, two- and four-year colleges.
  • A source of continuing education for IS professionals and the general public.
  • An advisor to government and industry regarding new and existing legislative issues.
  • A growing network of chapters and Special Interest Groups through which knowledge and ideas are freely exchanged.
  • The sole provider of the Professional Development Program in North America.
  • The creator of the Certificate of Data Processing (CDP) now administered inder the ICCP.

Who is a AITP Member?

Each individual member belongs to a Chapter. There are currently more than 220 Chapters grouped in Regions throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Membership includes, but is not limited to:

  • IS managers
  • programming-systems designers
  • systems engineers
  • researchers
  • educators
  • consultants
  • sales/marketing managers
  • publishers

Individuals involved in all facets of the IS industry make up AITP's present membership. AITP has proven to be particularly attractive to those "up and coming" in the industry - not just for helping to develop skills, but for the opportunities to step into uncharted "management" areas by serving as chairpersons, board members and officers.
